China Shipping Anniversary

Classic El Segundo was contracted to install a tent structure for a luncheon for 365 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first China Shipping vessel to arrive at the Port of LA.

The customer requested a tent with a minimum ceiling height of 25’ and no interior cables or poles as Cirque du Soleil performers were to be the lunchtime entertainment.

Classic installed the 100’ x 140’ structure along with two 20’ x 40’ catering kitchens, and a green room tent. The tent and rental crew, heavy equipment, K-rail, décor crew and lighting all had to be set up on a very rigid timeline to accommodate the working port and container movement around the docks.

In order to give a warm ambiance inside the tent without a budget for foliage, the Classic lighting department pulled out all the stops with red paper lanterns in four different sizes clustered at different heights and plenty of uplighting. A ceiling wash with red and gold gels, trussing for a stage wash in assorted colors, a custom gobo with the China Shipping logo, and spotlights for the podium completed the look.

The strike needed to be finished within 24 hours to get the dock back in working operation. A crew worked around the clock to make it happen…and happen it did!
